The Story of Utpanna Ekadashi (Vrat Katha)

Ancient scriptures tell us that a mighty demon named Mura once terrorized heaven and earth. The devas sought refuge in Lord Vishnu, who fought the demon for thousands of years.
One day, while resting in a cave named Hemavati, the Lord was attacked by Mura. Suddenly, a divine female power emerged from the Lord’s body. She fought Mura bravely and destroyed him.
When Lord Vishnu awoke, he was pleased and named her Ekadashi Devi. He blessed her saying, “Whoever observes a fast on your day will gain freedom from sins and attain me.”
This is how the sacred Utpanna Ekadashi story began, the day when fasting became a path of devotion and liberation.

For Shri Krishna’s devotees, it is a reminder that surrender, and service destroy inner demons like anger and pride.

Fasting Rules for Utpanna Ekadashi

Fasting on Utpanna Ekadashi purifies both body and mind. The general rule is to avoid grains, pulses, and beans. Simple fruits, milk, and nuts are allowed for those unable to fast completely.
Devotees chant the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra throughout the day, dedicating their thoughts to the Lord. During fasting, one should avoid negative thoughts, gossip, and anger. True fasting is about self-control and spiritual focus, not only abstaining from food.

At the end of the fast, devotees perform Utpanna Ekadashi parana at the proper time, usually the next day after sunrise. Breaking the fast with prasadam completes the vow with gratitude and grace.

Deep Spiritual Meaning in ISKCON Context

Within ISKCON, Ekadashi is more than a ritual. It is a spiritual training. Fasting helps devotees control their senses, and chanting purifies their consciousness. On this day, devotees strengthen their connection with Shri Krishna, who promises in the Bhagavad Gita 9.26,

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतम् अश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः

Transliteration:
Patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati,
tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ.

Meaning: He says, “Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I accept.”

Through fasting and prayer, devotees express their love and dependence on the Lord. Observing fast in Utpanna Ekadashi ISKCON style means living in gratitude, offering every action to Shri Krishna, and seeing him in every soul.

Importance of Food and Temple Donations

Charity plays an important role on the day of Ekadashi. The scriptures say food donation on this day brings the same result as performing a thousand yajnas.

Many devotees participate in ISKCON donations to help distribute prasadam to the needy food for life program. Giving food to the hungry pleases Shri Krishna, for he says in the Bhagavad Gita 9.27,

यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत्।
यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम्॥

Transliteration:
Yat karoṣi yad aśnāsi yaj juhoṣi dadāsi yat,
Yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kuruṣva mad-arpaṇam.

Meaning: He says, “Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give in charity, do it as an offering unto me.”

Supporting the ISKCON Ghaziabad temple through donations or voluntary service helps sustain its devotional programs and activities. When you donate to the temple in Ghaziabad, you help spread Shri Krishna consciousness, feed the hungry, and celebrate festivals.

In ISKCON, giving is seen as a sacred partnership with the Lord wherein he accepts your offering and returns it with multiplies blessings.
