Yogini Ekadashi 2026 Date
Yogini Ekadashi 2026 date: Saturday, 11 July 2026
The fast is broken on Dwadashi within the prescribed parana period. Since the exact parana time depends on location and the Vaishnava calendar, devotees should check the ISKCON Ghaziabad Vaishnava Calendar or contact the temple before breaking the fast.
The word upavasa, commonly translated as fasting, also conveys the idea of living closer to the Supreme Lord. Therefore, the deeper purpose of Yogini Ekadashi is not simply to avoid particular foods. It is to make more time for Krishna and less time for habits that disturb remembrance, humility and devotion.
Lord Krishna Explains the Glory of Yogini Ekadashi
The traditional Yogini Ekadashi vrat katha begins when Maharaja Yudhishthira asks Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi observed during the dark fortnight. Lord Krishna explains that this vrata is spiritually powerful and narrates the ancient history of Hemamali.
Ekadashi creates a regular pause in our busy lives and asks an important question: “Am I using my time, senses and energy in a way that helps me remember Krishna?”
The Story of Hemamali: Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Long ago, Kuvera, the celestial treasurer, lived in the beautiful city of Alakapuri. He was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. Among his servants was a Yaksha named Hemamali, whose daily responsibility was to collect fresh flowers from the sacred Manasarovara Lake and deliver them for Kuvera’s worship.
One day, after gathering the flowers, Hemamali became absorbed in the company of his wife, Swarupavati. Overcome by material attachment, he forgot the time and failed to bring the flowers required for the midday worship.
When the flowers did not arrive, Kuvera sent a messenger to discover the reason. Learning that Hemamali had neglected his service because he was absorbed in sense enjoyment, Kuvera became deeply displeased.
When Hemamali was brought before him, Kuvera condemned his carelessness. He declared that forgetting sacred duty because of uncontrolled attachment was a serious offence. In anger, Kuvera cursed Hemamali to lose his position, become separated from his wife and suffer from a severe disease.
Hemamali fell from his heavenly residence and wandered alone through forests and mountains, suffering from disease, hunger and regret. Yet he did not completely forget the Lord or the sacred service he had once performed.
After wandering for a long time, Hemamali reached the Himalayan region and came before the great sage Markandeya Rishi. The compassionate sage asked how he had fallen into such misery.
Hemamali did not hide his fault or blame anyone else. With humility, he confessed that he had neglected his duty because of uncontrolled attachment and had therefore received Kuvera’s curse.
Markandeya Rishi was pleased by his honesty and repentance. Rather than rejecting him, the sage gave him a path of recovery. He instructed Hemamali to faithfully observe Yogini Ekadashi, dedicate the day to the Lord and follow the vrata with sincerity.
Hemamali carefully followed the sage’s instructions. By observing Yogini Ekadashi with faith, prayer and devotion, he became purified of the reactions that had caused his suffering. His disease disappeared, his former appearance returned, and he regained his position. He was also reunited with his wife.
The story does not present fasting as a mechanical bargain for removing difficulties. It teaches that transformation begins when a person accepts responsibility, seeks saintly guidance and sincerely returns to devotional service.
Spiritual Significance of Yogini Ekadashi
The deepest significance of Yogini Ekadashi is purification of consciousness. Material attachment can make us forget what is truly important. Hemamali knew his duty, but at a critical moment his senses became stronger than his discrimination.
Ekadashi helps devotees reverse this tendency. By simplifying food, speech and activity for one day, we create more space for hearing and chanting. The mind becomes easier to observe, and we can recognise which habits support bhakti and which habits weaken it.
The story also reveals the power of sadhu-sanga. Hemamali’s recovery began when he honestly described his condition to Markandeya Rishi and accepted spiritual instruction.
Above all, Yogini Ekadashi reminds us that Krishna consciousness is a path of mercy. A sincere person is not permanently disqualified by a past mistake. When repentance is joined with genuine devotional action, spiritual life can begin again.

Benefits of Observing Yogini Ekadashi
Scriptural descriptions praise Yogini Ekadashi for its purifying spiritual results. These benefits should be understood as encouragement to deepen bhakti rather than as guarantees of material success.
A sincere observance may help a devotee:
- Reduce harmful habits and material distractions.
- Strengthen remembrance of Lord Krishna.
- Develop control over the tongue, mind and senses.
- Increase taste for chanting the Holy Name.
- Cultivate humility, discipline and self-reflection.
- Appreciate saintly association and devotional service.
- Experience greater peace and spiritual clarity.
- Progress towards pure love for Krishna.
The greatest benefit of Ekadashi is that it gives more time for hearing, chanting and serving. When the day is centred on Krishna, fasting becomes nourishment for the soul.
How to Observe Yogini Ekadashi
Ekadashi should be observed with devotion, sincerity and practical wisdom.
Begin With Prayer and Chanting
Rise early, bathe and offer prayers to Lord Krishna. Increase your japa and chant attentively:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare HareHare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare
The purpose is not simply to complete a certain number of rounds. Chanting is a personal appeal to the Lord for shelter, purification and devotional service.
Avoid Grains and Beans
ISKCON devotees generally avoid grains, beans and pulses on Ekadashi. Suitable preparations may include fruits, roots, milk products, nuts and permitted vegetables and spices.
Food should be prepared cleanly and offered to Lord Krishna before being honoured as prasadam. Devotees should also avoid packaged products that may contain grain-based ingredients.
Hear and Read Scripture
Read Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam or the Yogini Ekadashi vrat katha. Hearing Krishna-katha gives the mind positive spiritual engagement and helps the fast become joyful rather than burdensome.
Families may read the story together and discuss its practical lessons about responsibility, repentance, forgiveness and spiritual discipline.
Reduce Material Distractions
Limit gossip, unnecessary entertainment, excessive social media, anger and idle discussion. Fasting from distraction is as important as fasting from food.
The time saved from ordinary activities can be used for chanting, reading, temple service and association with devotees.
Engage in Seva
Offer practical service at home or at the temple. Devotees may help with cleaning, kirtan, festival arrangements, prasadam distribution, deity service or devotee care.
Those interested in offering regular service can join the ISKCON Ghaziabad volunteer team.
Break the Fast Properly
Complete parana on Dwadashi within the prescribed time. Check the temple calendar or seek guidance from experienced devotees before breaking the fast.
Those with medical or dietary needs should follow appropriate health guidance. Ekadashi should support remembrance of Krishna, not cause avoidable harm.

Serve Others Through Anna Daan and Prasadam Seva
Ekadashi inspires both personal purification and compassion. At ISKCON Ghaziabad, prasadam distribution extends Krishna’s mercy to children, economically weaker families, hospital attendants and people facing hunger.
Devotees may support Anna Daan Seva or contribute through the Food for Life donation page. Such service helps provide sanctified meals while connecting charity with devotion.
Seva is most spiritually meaningful when offered with humility, gratitude and the desire to please Krishna. By supporting prasadam distribution, devotees help nourish both body and soul.
The principle behind this service is simple: no one should remain hungry, either physically or spiritually. Prasadam nourishes the body while carrying the mercy and remembrance of Lord Krishna.
