Damodar Leela is observed mainly during Kartik month. Kartik is one of the four months of the Chaturmasya in Hindu scriptures. In 2024, Kartik month starts on October 17, 2024, and ends on November 15, 2024.

The major celebrations of Damodar Leela take place during this entire month, but they become magnified and especially vivid around Kartik Purnima, November 15, 2024. This time is said to be very sacred for worshipping Lord Krishna and attending his Leelas (divine pastimes).

Story of Damodar Leela

The Damodar Leela story is one of the most sentimental tales in the entire epic of Shrimad Bhagavatam. Lord Krishna was up to one of his usual mischiefs. He broke a pot of butter, and started feeding it to the monkeys. His mother, Yashoda, caught him, and decided that now was the time to punish him. She tried to tie him to a grinding mortar with a rope. However, no matter how much rope she used, it would always fall short by two inches.

This went on till Mother Yashoda became tired. Lastly, observing her efforts and love, Shri Krishna permitted himself to be tied. The two inches by which the rope was always short show that devotion and effort are needed to bind God. One inch stands for the devotee’s sincere effort and the other inch for God’s mercy. When both come together, the Lord is bound by love.

Significance of Damodar Leela

This significance of Damodar Leela is more than just a playful tale. This Leela represents a child at play. It, in fact, expresses the infinite love a devotee has for God. The master of all creations, with his control over everything in the universe, can allow himself to be in bondage to his mother’s love in this Leela. Love and devotion can bind even the All-Powerful.

Damodar Leela teaches us also that God responds to pure devotion, and the power of cosmic does not stand in the way of his responding. He is gentle and merciful, and despite his mightiness, for his devotees, he becomes small and available. It teaches us that God is not interested in the collection of wealth or power but a love-filled heart with devotion.
