Jaya Ekadashi 2024
Another name of Jaya Ekadashi is “Jaya Ekadashi”.
Ekadashi is not just a fast but a highway to reach “Vaikuntha Dham”.
It is mentioned inBrihannardiya Purana “O Brahmins, even if one is a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra, if one observes the Ekadashi fast with full devotion, then he is definitely entitled to salvation”.
Ekadashi also known as “mother of devotion” observed by devotees for the pleasure of lord Sri Hari.
“There is no pilgrimage like Ganga. There is no teacher like a mother. There is no god like Lord Vishnu and there is no penance greater than fasting. There is no mother like forgiveness. There is no wealth like fame. There is no benefit like knowledge. There is no father like religion. There is no friend like Vivek and there is no fast greater than Ekadashi”.

Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha
In ancient times, Devraj Indra ruled heaven. The gods were roaming with the nymphs in the Nandanvan adorned with the Parijat tree. Devraj Indra, the leader of fifty crore Gandharva’s, had organized the dance as per his wish while roaming in the forest. The three prominent Gandharva’s were Pushpadanta, Chitrasen and his son.
Chitrasen’s wife name was malini. Malini and chitrasen’s daughter nane was “pushpavanti”. Puspadanta gandharva had son named “malyavan”. Pushpavanti and malyavan also came to perform dance for indra dev’s pleasure. They were singing dancing along with other apsara’s.
Malyavan was fascinated by pushpavanti’s beauty. While performing for dev raj indtadue to their loving glances at each other, they became fascinated and their minds got distracted due to which they could not sing properly. Sometimes the rhythm was wrong and sometimes the singing stopped. Angered and insulted by this, Indra cursed, “Both of you are fallen. You are fools. Shame on you. As a result of disobeying my orders, you will be born as husband and wife in the womb of a pisacha.”
Both of them became very sad after receiving such a curse from Indra. After going to the Himalayas and becoming a pisacha, they continued to suffer terrible sorrows. Malyavan was wandering in a cave in the mountain, suffering from this affliction he had received from the physical world about the reason of their sufferings. One day he asked his wife “what sins we have committed that we became pisacha and suffering so much? He said this is even worst than living in hell, we should try to get rid of this”.
Both were busy worrying. But by the grace of Krishna Magh month Ekadashi tithi arrived . Famous by the name ‘Jaya Or Jaya Ekadashi’. On Ekadashi day , they did not consumed food and water, they did not killed any living being and they did not ate any fruit. Distraught with grief, they sat under the banyan tree till sunset. The dreadful night appeared before them but they could not even sleep. They did not enjoy any kind of pleasure .
The night ended and the sun rose. Dwadashi day arrived. They unknowingly observed the fast of ‘Jaya’ Ekadashi and kept vigil throughout the night. Due to the effect of fasting and the power of Lord Vishnu, both got freed from this pisacha yoni and regained their previous form.
The affection arose again in their heart. Adorned with ornaments, they went to heaven in a plane. They happily greeted Devraj indra . Seeing them in their previous form, Indra was surprised and asked, “By the influence of which virtue did you have became free from the pisacha yoni? Despite being cursed by me, by the shelter of which god did you have became free from the curse?”
Malyavan said, “O Swami! By the grace of Lord Vasudeva and by the fast of ‘Jaya’ Ekadashi, we got freed from the pisacha yoni.
Devraj Indra said, “Those who take refuge in Lord Vasudev’s lotus feet and observe Ekadashi are also worshipable by us.”
Thus here ends the Jaya Ekadashi vrat katha which Lord Sri Krishnahimself described to yudhishthira maharaja in bhavishyottar purana.

Ekadashi FAQ’S
Question: Can we offer food to the Deities on the day of Ekadashi?
Answer: Srila Prabhupada says that the observance of Ekadashi is for the Jiva principle as it suffers from material diseases, not for the Vishnu principle.
Therefore, we can offer food to Shri Radhakrishna and Lord Jagannath even on the day of Ekadashi, but we should not offer food to Gaur-Nitai and Spiritual Guru.
Gaur-Nitai teaches devotion to Shri Krishna through his conduct, hence despite being Krishna-Balram, Gaur-Nitai should not offer food.
Question: Is it required for one to perform “udyapan” of Ekadashivrat?
Answer: “Udyapan” is done for that fast in whose observance some material desire is inherent. When the material desires are fulfilled, the fast is dissolved and there is no need to observe the fast again.
But there is no material desire in observing Ekadashi fast, hence there is no need for its “Udyapan”, and one can never stop observing it.
Question: What is the benefit of studying the glory of Ekadashi?
Answer: If a person is physically unable to observe Ekadashi fast, then he must study the glory of Ekadashi. In this way, he also gets the same results as the one who observes the fast of Purna Ekadashi. Every person should observe Ekadashi to the best of his ability.
Question: What can be eaten and what not on the day of Ekadashi?
Answer: If possible, on the day of Ekadashi, one should neither drink water nor eat anything. If this is not possible, one can observe the fast by drinking water. If this is also not possible, then you can observe the fast by eating fruits. If even this is not possible then you can take milk products along with fruits. Even if there is difficulty, you can eat Ekadashi prasadam.
