Why Should We Read Bhagavad Gita?

Table of Contents

When Srila Sanatan Goswami met Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he asked the following points:

oṁajñāna-timirāndhasya
jñānāñjana-śalākayā
cakṣurunmīlitaṁyena
tasmaiśrī-guravenamaḥ

keāmi’, ‘keneāmāyajāretāpa-traya’ ihānāhijāni — ‘kemanehitahaya’  (CC Madhya Lila 20.102)

Who am I? Why do the threefold miseries always give me trouble? If I do not know this, how can I be benefited?

There are three types of miseries which are called AdhyatmikaKlesha, AdhibhoutikKlesha, and AdhidaivikKlesha.

Adhyatmik Klesha-  Adhyatmik Klesha refers to those miseries caused by Body and Mind. Adhibhoutik Klesha refers to those miseries inflicted by other Living entities.

Adhidaivik Klesha-  It refers to natural disasters caused by other Demi Gods of higher planets such as extreme cold and hot weather, thunderbolts, Natural Disasters, Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Draughts etc. In this material world, there is a danger at every step.

Further, Srila Sanatan Goswami asks to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, “Actually I do not know how to inquire about the goal of life and the process for obtaining it. Being merciful upon me, please explain all these truths.”Afterwards, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu tells Srila Sanatan Goswami about absolute Truth

From this article, we should understand that we are taking birth in Ignorance, We are living our life in Ignorance and we are dying in ignorance only. In Kaliyuga, People are so lazy, dull-minded, misguided, unlucky, and always disturbed, that they do not know what is the ultimate benefit for them.

prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥsabhya

mandāḥsumanda-matayo
manda-bhāgyāhyupadrutāḥ

“O learned one, in this Iron Age of Kali men almost always have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed.’’

People are maddened towards worldly pleasures up to such an extent that they have forgotten that they are eternal Part and Parcel of Lord Sri Krishna. Therefore, due to the influence of Maya and Kali, they have been continuously thinking about achieving material happiness as the Ultimate Goal of Life.

When a person considers sense gratification the aim of life, he certainly becomes mad after materialistic living and engages in all kinds of sinful activity. He does not know that due to his past misdeeds, he has already received a body which, although temporary, is the cause of his misery. The living entity should not have taken on a material body, but he has been awarded the material body for sense gratification. Therefore I think it not befitting an intelligent man to involve himself again in the activities of sense gratification by which he perpetually gets material bodies one after another. (SBG 5.5.4)

This shloka describes the real disease of the conditioned Soul. Therefore, to get rid of material disease we should read Bhagavad Geeta to find the answers to different questions like-

  • Why are we living in this material world?
  • What is the ultimate objective of Human life of life?
  • Why are we suffering in this material World?
  • Why are we suffering the threefold miseries given by nature?
  • Who am I?
  • What is my supreme destination?
  • Why am I changing to a different body?

In Human life, it is expected from us to inquire about Supreme and absolute Truth (Athāto brahma jijñāsā).

But People of Kaliyuga are so unfortunate that they are doing Sinful activities daily and their life is simply based on Eating, Sleeping, mating, and defending. They have always been struggling with their Six senses including Mind. Therefore, we should read Bhagavad Gita to get rid of bodily conception of life, and animalistic way of life and to get rid of ignorance. We should also read Bhagavad Gita to find the answers to all the questions related to the ultimate aim and objective of life, about our true identity, our relation with God KRISHNA, activities of Supreme personality of Godhead, Nature of different types of people,Our activities with relation to Lord KRISHNA

Gift a Gita, Gift a Better Life

Lord Krishna tells us in Bhagavad Geeta:

mamaivāṁśojīva-loke
jīva-bhūtaḥsanātanaḥ
manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi
prakṛti-sthānikarṣati (BG 15.7)

“The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind”.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita is also called Gitopanishad. Bhagavad Gita is the essence of all Vedic knowledge.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita consists of 700 Shlokas.

We should read Bhagavad Gita just like Arjun has understood Bhagavad Geeta. Without being a devotee of Lord KRISHNA , No one can understand Bhagavad Geeta in the true Senses. Arjuna accepts KRISHNA  as his GURU and he becomes submissive and listens to the message of the Bhagavad Geeta. It has been described in this verse

 kārpaṇya-doṣopahata-svabhāvaḥ
pṛcchāmitvāṁ dharma-sammūḍha-cetāḥ
yacchreyaḥsyānniścitaṁbrūhi tan me
śiṣyaste ’haṁśādhimāṁtvāṁprapannam

“Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of miserly weakness. In this condition, I am asking You to tell me for certain what is best for me. Now I am Your disciple and a soul surrendered unto You. Please instruct me”.

Similarly, we should take the instructions of Bhagavad Geeta from disciplic Succession beginning from Brahma. We should approach Self realized Guru and first serve him. Then When the Guru becomes pleased with us he imparts us real Knowledge because he has seen the truth. KRISHNA  also instructs us regarding how to read Bhagavad Gita and how to approach Guru in Verse 4.34:

tadviddhipraṇipātena
paripraśnenasevayā
upadekṣyantitejñānaṁ
jñāninastattva-darśinaḥ

“Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth”.
