How To Control Mind

What is Uncontrolled Mind?

When our mind is filled with wrong desires such as lust, anger, greed, pride, illusion and envy. In that scenario, Our Mind is called in uncontrolled state and our consciousness becomes impurified. It happens due to  our wrongly  attached with this world and due to attachments, we expect something in terms of post, position, respect etc. but it does not happen according to us. Because, we are not controller and our mind is in conditioned state due to effects of the three modes of material nature over our mind viz. SattvaGuna, RajoGuna, TamoGuna.

Nature of Uncontrolled Mind

Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 6.34:

cañcalaṁ hi manaḥkṛṣṇa
pramāthibalavaddṛḍham
tasyāhaṁnigrahaṁmanye
vāyorivasu-duṣkaram

“The mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Kṛṣṇa, and to subdue it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind”.

Cause of Uncontrolled Mind

Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita Verse 2.62, 2.63, 3.40 about the cause of Uncontrolled Mind:

dhyāyatoviṣayānpuṁsaḥ
saṅgasteṣūpajāyate
saṅgātsañjāyatekāmaḥ
kāmātkrodho ’bhijāyate

“While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises”.

krodhādbhavatisammohaḥ
sammohātsmṛti-vibhramaḥ
smṛti-bhraṁśādbuddhi-nāśo
buddhi-nāśātpraṇaśyati

“From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool”.

indriyāṇimanobuddhir
asyādhiṣṭhānamucyate
etairvimohayatyeṣa
jñānamāvṛtyadehinam

“The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this lust. Through them lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him”.

We think about our needs and wants related to this material body. Therefore, we develop attachments. When our need is not fulfilled then lust develops and then anger arises as explained in BG 2.62 and finally our spiritual  intelligence is lost as explained in BG 2.63 and if our need related to material body is fulfilled then our need becomes more and more and we want to satisfy need therefore, Greed develops. In this manner, Our Mind becomes uncontrolled due to effects of wrong desires of Lust, anger, greed, pride, iIllusion and envy.
